What a solar screen actually is

Stop The Heat Before It Gets Through The Glass

A solar screen is a framed mesh panel that mounts on the outside of your window. It is not a bug screen and it is not window film. The mesh is woven tightly enough to intercept a large share of the sunlight hitting that window and send the heat back out before it ever touches the glass.

That outside part is the whole trick, and it is why screens work differently from blinds or curtains. Once sunlight has come through the glass it is already heat inside the room. Blinds just stand between you and it. A solar screen never lets it in, so the room does not warm up in the first place and your AC is not fighting a window that has been soaking up sun since two in the afternoon.

We measure every opening and build the screens to fit it, because factory sizes and real windows rarely agree. And we will tell you honestly which of your windows are worth screening and which ones are not. Most Rockwall houses do not need screens on all four sides.

Where you notice it

The Signs You Have A Window Problem, Not An AC Problem

People usually blame the air conditioner. Sometimes that is fair. But if the following sound familiar, the problem is that a few of your windows are pouring heat into the house faster than the system can pull it back out.

  • One room is unusable after about two in the afternoon. Almost always a west-facing room. The rest of the house is fine and that one is ten degrees warmer.
  • The AC runs and runs without cycling off. On the hottest afternoons the system never catches up, because it is competing with the windows rather than just the outside temperature.
  • The glass is warm to the touch from inside. That is the sun already through and turning into heat in your living room.
  • Flooring, rugs, or furniture have faded in a stripe. The stripe shows you exactly which window is doing it and roughly what time of day.
  • You keep the blinds shut on a nice day. If you are closing off a window you would rather look out of, a screen gets you the view back.
  • Glare on the TV or a screen at the same time every day. Predictable glare is a sun-angle problem, and it has a physical fix.
How the job runs

Measured, Built, Fitted

Screens are a small job compared with a roof, and they should feel like one. Here is the whole sequence.

1

Free Measure

We come out, measure every opening you are considering, and walk the house with you to work out which windows are actually worth doing.

2

Written Quote

Priced per opening so you can see exactly what each window costs and add or drop any of them before you decide.

3

Built To Your Openings

Frames cut and screens built to your measurements. Factory sizes and real windows almost never agree, which is why a custom fit sits flush instead of leaving gaps at the corners.

4

Installation

Mounted from outside, so nobody is tramping through your house. Most jobs are done in a single visit.

5

Walkthrough

We walk the house with you, check every screen sits properly, and show you how to take one out and put it back if you ever want to clean the glass.

Which windows

You Probably Do Not Need Them On Every Window

Plenty of companies will happily quote you the whole house. On most Rockwall homes that is money spent on windows that were never the problem. Here is how we sort it when we walk the house with you.

Worth screening…

  • West-facing windows. They take the worst of it, in the hottest part of the day, at the lowest sun angle.
  • South-facing windows with nothing shading them.
  • Any window in a room you avoid in the afternoon, or that has visible fading in front of it.
  • Large panes and sliding doors, because the bigger the glass the more heat is coming through it.
This is usually a handful of openings, not a whole house.

Usually leave alone…

  • North-facing windows. They get very little direct sun, so there is not much to block.
  • Anything already shaded by a mature tree, a deep porch, or the neighbour’s house.
  • Windows in rooms you barely use, where you will never notice the difference.
  • A window you rely on for a particular view, if you would rather keep it completely clear.
Spending here is spending for the sake of matching.

Some people do want every window screened so the house matches from the street, and that is a perfectly good reason. We just think you should be choosing it rather than being sold it.

Dreading the August bill again?

The measure is free and the quote is per window, so you can see exactly what each one costs before you decide anything.

One more thing

We Are A Roofing Company First

Worth being straight about: screens are not our main trade. Roofing is what we have done since 1995, and screens are one of the smaller jobs we do around it. That turns out to be useful for you, because while we are at your house measuring windows, there is somebody on site who actually knows what they are looking at when they glance up.

  • We will look at the roof while we are there. Free, and only if you want us to. It takes a few minutes and you get an honest read on where your roof stands.
  • No pressure attached. If the roof is fine we will say it is fine. Most of our screen customers never become roofing customers and that is completely fine by us.
  • You get the photos either way. Even if you do nothing with them, you will know what your roof looks like from up there instead of guessing from the driveway.
  • Thirty years in one market. The same crew and the same phone number will still be here whether you call about a screen or a roof.

What changes

Three Things You Will Actually Notice

Reduce heat, lower bills, protect what is inside. Here is the mechanism behind each one, so you can judge for yourself whether it is worth doing on your house.

Cooler Rooms

The heat is intercepted outside the glass instead of being absorbed by it, so the room never warms up the way it used to. The difference is most obvious in the west-facing room you have been avoiding since June.

An AC That Gets A Break

Less heat coming in means the system is not fighting your windows all afternoon, so it cycles off instead of running flat out. That is where the saving on a summer bill comes from.

Less Fading Inside

Direct sun is what bleaches flooring, rugs, and furniture, usually in a stripe that follows the window. Cutting the sun before it comes in slows that down considerably.

How We Quote It

Free Measure And Quote

No charge to come out, measure, and price it. No obligation attached to any of it.

Priced Per Opening

You see what each window costs, so you can add or drop any of them before you decide.

A Price That Holds

Once the quote is written, that is the number. No surprises when the screens go up.

A Small Job, Done Properly

Screens are a smaller job than most of what we do, and plenty of companies treat small jobs accordingly. We would rather do this one well, because a homeowner who liked how we handled six windows is the one who calls us about the roof five years later. That is genuinely how most of our work arrives.

We fit screens for homeowners within about an hour of Rockwall, including Rowlett, Heath, Wylie, McLendon-Chisholm, Royse City, Sunnyvale, Garland, Mesquite, Sachse, Forney, and Anna. If you are close and not sure whether we cover your address, call and ask. The answer is usually yes.

Common questions

Solar Screen FAQs

A framed mesh panel that mounts on the outside of your window. Not a bug screen, and not film stuck to the glass. The mesh is woven tightly enough to intercept most of the sunlight hitting that window and send the heat back out before it reaches the glass at all.

Position. Blinds sit inside, so the sun has already come through the glass and turned into heat in the room. The blind just stands between you and it. Film is on the glass itself and helps, but the glass still absorbs and re-radiates heat. A screen stops it outside the window, so the heat never enters the room in the first place.

They will be dimmer, and that is the trade-off. A solar screen cuts glare and heat by cutting light, so a screened window is noticeably softer than an unscreened one. Most people find the room more comfortable and stop closing the blinds altogether, which nets out brighter. But a room you already think is dark is not a good candidate.

Yes, though the view is slightly muted, a bit like looking through good sunglasses. It works the other way round in daylight: people outside see much less of your interior than they did, which a lot of homeowners like on front-facing rooms.

West-facing first, they take the worst of it. Then south-facing windows with nothing shading them, any window in a room you avoid in the afternoon, and large panes or sliding doors. North-facing windows and anything already shaded by a tree or a deep porch usually are not worth it. We will walk the house with you and say so.

Fair question, and the honest answer is that the screen keeps working. It blocks winter sun as well as summer sun, which is a small loss on a cold sunny day. On a Texas house the summer gain usually outweighs it comfortably, but if a particular room depends on winter sun for warmth, tell us and we will leave that window off the list.

It depends entirely on the size and number of openings, which is why the measure is free and the quote is priced per window. You will see exactly what each one costs and can add or drop any of them before deciding anything.
