Finding The Leak Is The Hard Part
Anybody can nail down a shingle. The part that takes thirty years of doing this is working out where the water is actually getting in, because water does not fall straight down through a roof. It gets in at one point, runs along the decking or the framing, and shows up on your ceiling somewhere with no obvious relationship to the hole.
We found one on an eight-year-old house where the water-heater vent flashing had been cut about two inches short, and a nail was sitting right in the path. Water wicked down that nail for eight years before it ever showed up on the sheetrock. Nobody was going to find that by patching the spot above the stain.
So every repair starts the same way: we get on the roof, trace it back to the real source, photograph it, and put a written estimate in your hands. If the roof is genuinely past repairing we will tell you that too, and point you at roof replacement instead of selling you a patch we know will not hold.

The Repairs We Do Most
Most roof repairs in Rockwall come down to a short list. Here is what we are usually fixing, and what is actually involved in each one beyond sticking a shingle back down.
- Pipe boots and penetrations. The rubber collar around a plumbing vent dries out and splits, usually around year ten to fifteen in this heat. Cheap part, easy fix, and a genuinely common source of a ceiling stain.
- Flashing and counter flashing. Chimneys, walls, and skylights. Flashing comes up off the deck, counter flashing comes out of the wall and laps over it, so water sheds down the layers. If somebody built that wrong, no amount of sealant fixes it.
- Valleys. Two slopes meeting means concentrated water volume, which means valleys wear faster than the field and fail sooner.
- Wind-lifted and missing shingles. The ones that blew off are obvious. The real work is the ones still up there with a broken seal strip, because those are what goes next time.
- Backed-out fasteners. All fasteners move, because all houses in North Texas move, because of our soil. A nail that has worked its way up is a hole waiting for the next storm.
- Decking repair. When water has been getting in a while, the deck underneath is usually soft. Covering soft decking just moves the problem, so it gets cut out and replaced.
From Phone Call To Fixed
Most repairs are a single visit once we know what we are dealing with. Here is the sequence, and where the time actually goes.
Free Inspection
We get on the roof. Not a look from the ladder at the edge, because you cannot diagnose a leak from the gutter line.
Trace It To The Source
This is the part that takes the experience. Where the water shows up inside is almost never where it got in, so we work backwards until we find the actual opening.
Photos And A Written Estimate
You see what we saw, and you get a clear written price. If it turns out the roof is past repairing, we say so rather than selling you a patch.
The Repair
Built back the way it should have been built. Soft decking cut out and replaced, details rebuilt in metal where they belong, shingles matched as closely as the original will allow.
Cleanup And Walkthrough
We magnet-sweep for nails, walk you through what we did and why, and leave you the photos. If the same spot leaks again, you call us.

Two Repairs, Same Price On Paper
When you get two repair quotes and the numbers look similar, this is usually the difference. One of them ends the problem. The other one gets you to next spring, and by then whoever did it is not answering.
A repair that holds…
- Starts by finding the actual source, not by patching the spot above the stain.
- Opens the roof up enough to check the decking, and replaces what has gone soft.
- Rebuilds the detail in metal, layered so water sheds down it the way it is supposed to.
- Comes with photographs of what was wrong and what was done about it.
A repair that buys six months…
- Works from the inside out, guessing at the source from where the stain is.
- Runs a bead of sealant over the detail and calls it done. That is not part of a roofing system, that is just hope.
- Leaves soft decking in place, because checking it means opening the roof up.
- Holds until the sealant moves, which in Texas heat is not very long at all.
When you are comparing quotes, ask each roofer where they think the water is getting in and how they know. The answer tells you almost everything about which of these two you are about to buy.
Water coming in right now?
That is an emergency call, not a repair call. Phone us and we will talk you through what to do, then come out, tarp it, and dry it in.
We Navigate The Claim Process With You
Some repairs are a straightforward bill. Others turn out to be storm damage, and then there is a claim involved. Here is what we do in that case, and just as importantly, what we do not do. We are roofers, not adjusters and not attorneys. We talk about the scope of work on your roof, never about your policy.
- A free inspection, documented. We photograph the bruising, the wind lift, and the flashing, and we pin down the date of loss while it is still fresh.
- Make us your contractor of record. That means we are the point of contact with your adjuster instead of you sorting it out on your own, and we meet them on the roof.
- We talk scope of work, not policy. We bring up code and the manufacturer’s instructions to make the case for the correct repair, and we file a supplement when the scope leaves something out.
- Straight expectations. If there is not enough damage to stand behind a claim, we will tell you that.
What We Bring To The Adjuster Meeting
Documentation, not opinions.
Sometimes A Repair Is The Wrong Call
We would rather point you to the right thing than sell you the thing you called about. Three situations where a repair is not what you actually need.
Water Is Coming In Now
That is an emergency, and it is time-sensitive in a way a repair is not. Call us and we will talk you through what to do right now, then tarp it and dry it in. Emergency roof repair.
The Repairs Keep Stacking Up
New leaks in new places, three service calls in two years, or a roof at the end of its rated life. At that point repairs are buying months, not years. Roof replacement.
Nothing Is Wrong Yet
If you just want somebody to look before something goes wrong, that is maintenance, and it is the cheapest roofing you will ever buy. Roof maintenance.
What You Get On A Repair
Free Inspection First
We diagnose before we quote. Zero pressure, and no charge to find out what is actually wrong.
Photos Of The Real Problem
You see what we saw and what we did about it, not just a line on an invoice.
A Price That Holds
The written estimate stands unless we open it up and find hidden damage, and then you see the photo before we go further.
Still Here If It Leaks Again
The real test of a roof repair is whether the company is still around when you call about it. We have been in this market since 1995, the office is across the bridge in Rowlett, and most of our work still comes from a neighbor pointing down the street. That only happens if the repairs hold.
We serve homeowners within about an hour of Rockwall, including Rowlett, Heath, Wylie, McLendon-Chisholm, Royse City, Sunnyvale, Garland, Mesquite, Sachse, Forney, and Anna. If you are close and not sure whether we cover your address, call and ask. The answer is usually yes.
What Bacon Roofing Customers Say
Roof Repair FAQs
How do you find where a leak is actually coming from?
By getting on the roof and working backwards. Water gets in at one point, travels along the decking or the framing, and shows up on your ceiling somewhere unrelated. So we start at the stain, work out where the water could have travelled from, and check the usual suspects: penetrations, flashing, valleys, and fasteners. One we found had been wicking down a single nail for eight years because a vent flashing was cut two inches short.
Will the repair price change once you start?
You get a clear, written estimate up front. Unless we open it up and find hidden damage, usually soft decking underneath, that price does not change. If we do find something, you see the photo before we go any further.
How do I know whether I need a repair or a whole new roof?
Broadly: damage in one area on a roof that still has life in it is a repair. Leaks appearing in new places, damage spread across several slopes, or a roof at the end of its rated life points to replacement. The free inspection settles it, and plenty of ours end with us telling a homeowner their roof is fine.
Can you just seal it?
Sometimes sealant is the correct material for a specific detail. But sealant smeared over a flashing that was built wrong is not a repair, it is a delay, and in Texas heat it is a short one. If somebody quotes you a caulk-only fix for a flashing problem, ask them what happens when the sealant moves.
Will the new shingles match my roof?
We match as closely as the original product and its age allow. On an older roof, weathering means a repaired area can look slightly newer even with the identical shingle. We will tell you honestly what to expect before we start rather than after.
Do you repair storm damage, and does insurance cover it?
Yes. If it turns out to be storm damage, we help you navigate the process. Make us your contractor of record and we become the point of contact with your adjuster, meet them on the roof, and document the damage with dated photos. We discuss the scope of work and what code and the manufacturer’s instructions require. We are roofers, not adjusters or attorneys, so we do not advise on your policy.
Are inspections really free?
Yes, and there is no obligation attached. Free inspections, zero pressure is how we work, not a promotion. If the roof does not need anything, that is what we will tell you.
What areas do you serve?
Homeowners within about an hour of Rockwall, including Rowlett, Heath, Wylie, McLendon-Chisholm, Royse City, Sunnyvale, Garland, Mesquite, Sachse, Forney, and Anna.
